Following a 47-point loss last week, the Brisbane Lions will look to take advantage of their double chance (having finished top four) by once again trying to benefit from the confines of the Gabba (11-2 this year) when they host the Greater Western Sydney Giants.
It’s now 3,661 days since the Lions last won a finals match, and while the end result last week was disappointing, there was actually quite a lot to like about the team’s first quarter effort (ten shots at goal to just three).
As such, if the club can improve its conversion ratio in front of goal (32% last week to a season average of 50.4%), while at the same time their forward three of Harris Andrews, Lincoln McCarthy and Charlie Cameron can stop giving away stupid free kicks, they are right in this contest.
Fresh off their demotion job of the Bulldogs (victory by 58 points), the Giants enter week two of the finals with a spring in their step as the club eyes a possible third preliminary weekend in the last four years.
When these two squared off in round 16, the Lions jumped the Giants early to set up a 20 point quarter-time lead, a margin which ended up being the Giants’ losing result. In fact in GWS’ 14 wins this year, only two have been achieved when behind at the first break – no doubt a point which will be emphasised by coach Leon Cameron pre-game.
Players to watch: Eric Hipwood (Lions) is the only player this year to have kicked four goals in a quarter. In his first career final appearance last week however, he was kept scoreless.
Like Hipwood, Jeremy Finlayson (GWS) played his first ever final last week but his three goal, three behind effort gave the Giants 18% of their total points.
Stat attack: Brisbane have won just one of their last seven contests against GWS.
GWS have not lost at the Gabba since 2013.
Both teams have scored over 100 points six times this year.
Brisbane have not lost three in a row this year.
My prediction to the match
Lions are very strong now and I think they have very good chances to win the match, so my prediction:
Brisbane Lions to win the match with odd @1.66 in 1xbet
