Match preview

A rematch of last year’s Grand Final takes blockbuster round three status as the Collingwood Magpies seek redemption over the West Coast Eagles, a team that a little over six months ago stole their Premiership dreams (which would have tied them for most all-time with 16).

How Collingwood fans will not forget the name Dom Sheed in a hurry, the man who with less than three minutes on the clock slotted home a tight goal to earn the Eagles their fourth AFL Premiership.

That, however, was 2018. Right now both teams sit mid-table (with a 1-1 record) and the opportunity to gain a four-point advantage over an opponent they are very likely to be competing against for a top-four position is the reward.

With the likes of Dayne Beams, Darcy Moore and Jordan Roughead now strong cogs of the team (all three did not play in the Grand Final last year), Magpies fans will surely head to the game full of confidence.

A win for the Eagles however, which would be their third in a row at the MCG, would not only establish a psychological advantage over a current day rival, but dispel any concerns about a Premiership hangover.

Players to watch: Last year’s Norm Smith medallist Luke Shuey (Eagles) looms again as a midfield catalyst. His second quarter last week in which he accumulated 11 possessions and two long-range goals was simply brilliant.

With an absolute masterclass effort last week which produced five goals, Jordan De Goey (Magpies) sent a message to anybody planning to stop him this week or even this season. How rapt the club must be knowing he recently extended his contract until the end of 2020.

Stat attack: Collingwood set an AFL record last week with 99 marks in the first half.

Despite losing the inside 50s 62-47 last week, the Eagles still won by 52 points.

Four of the last five H2H matches have seen a winning margin for either team of less than 20 points.
A 166.5 ‘total game score line’ has failed to be surpassed in the last two H2H contests (163 & 156).
