NAME: Geelong Cats – Hawthorn Hawks
DATE: July 21, 2019
TIME: 03:10 UTC
VENUE: Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne , Australia
The top of the ladder Geelong Cats look to continue their undefeated MCG record this year (4-0) when they taken on traditional rivals the Hawthorn Hawks, who still have a shot of making the finals despite ranking 11th.
Three wins from their last six matches and the Cats will confirm the minor Premiership. For coach Chris Scott, achieving those three wins and avoiding injuries are probably his two main objectives as the club continues to build strongly towards a deep finals campaign.
It has been over 45 years since a club has lead the league in points scored and least points allowed so deep in a season, but that is the exact two categories the Cats currently lead with a points per game average of 89.9 and opponent score of just 62.1.
From losing five of six matches and seemingly having their finals hopes evaporated, the Hawks have enjoyed back-to-back wins and now get to test themselves against the number one team in the competition to stay in the hunt for a top-eight position.
The problem the Hawks have in regards to defeating Geelong this week is finding a way to score enough points. Only once this season has the club breached the 90-point barrier, whereas the Cats have achieved such a feat nine times.
Players to watch: After another big game last week, Tim Kelly (Cats) is now favourite for the Brownlow Medal. It still begs the question how he didn’t play at AFL level until he was 24!
Blake Hardwick (Hawks) spent time on the Geelong star in their round five contest earlier this year and it wasn’t pretty for him, with Kelly racking up 29 disposals and two goals compared to Hardwick’s return of just 18 touches.
Stat attack: As a Cat, Patrick Dangerfield averages 30 possessions a game against the Hawks.
Five of the last six H2H contests have seen a winning margin of less than 24 points.
Joel Selwood and Harry Taylor (Cats) have now had 175 wins as teammates, 18 short of the all-time record.
Hawthorn have only won ten of the last 31 matches against the Cats at the MCG.
